The power of lived experience.

The power or lived experience

The power of lived experience v’s the immediately forgettable.

Cast your mind back to all the training sessions you have sat through over the years. Some was undoubtedly immediately forgettable other sessions really stuck with you and you carry around a few golden nuggets from them to this day.

When I think back to recent training its the power of lived experiences that had made the most impact upon me.

The black female student talking about her experience of studying in a male dominated discipline and how racism had also played a part.

The supervisor talking about the poor example set by their manager.

A woman talking about the assumption that her much younger male colleague is the boss and she more junior.

A trans colleague talking about their experience of living life as their true self.

A coachee talking about the lightbulb moment and the impact that the power of coaching had upon them.

Students from overseas talking about their experience of moving to another country thousands of miles away from home.

What can you take away from this? Let’s move away from “death by powerpoint” and look at ways of delivering truly impactful learning experiences. Experiences that will live in the mind for years, not the immediately forgettable.
